Alberto’s heaviest squalls are currently moving ashore between Panama City and Destin, Florida. We have been monitoring coastal observations, but have not seen any reports of sustained tropical storm-force winds inland in these squalls. Earlier this morning, Apalachicola reported a sustained wind of 29 mph with a gust to 41 mph. Reports from a recon plane indicate that Alberto’s max winds have decreased slightly, down to 45 mph. Such winds were reported by a buoy south of Apalachicola over the last several hours. However, on average, the winds around Alberto are below tropical storm strength. Any tropical storm-force sustained winds reaching the Florida coast will be quite isolated.

The day air that was entrained into Alberto’s center overnight has significantly reduced the rainfall potential across the southeast U.S. We are not expecting any widespread heavy rainfall across northern Florida, Alabama, or Georgia. Some areas could see isolated rainfall totals of 3-6 inches, however.
