The Captain of the Port New Orleans is issuing a safety advisory for the waters of the Lower Mississippi River from Mile Marker (MM) 214 Above Head of Passes (AHP) to MM 216 AHP. This advisory is needed to protect persons and vessels from the potential safety hazards associated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) revetment operations occurring along the left descending bank (LDB) near MM 215 AHP (Manchac Bend). The revetment operations will be conducted daily from 9:00 AM until 9:00 PM from December 30, 2019 through January 6, 2020, not including the weekend January 4-5. During times of actual revetment work, the Mat Sinking Unit (MSU) will extend approximately 600-800’ channelward from the bank. At the conclusion of daily operations, the platform will be relocated and not obstruct the channel.
This advisory is in effect each day from December 30, 2019 – January 3, 2020 and January 6, 2020, from 9:00 AM until 9:00 PM or the completion of daily operations, with the following provisions:
- Deep draft vessels are advised not to transit from MM 214 to MM 216 AHP LMR during revetment operations.
- Shallow draft vessels will be limited to one-way traffic on a case-by-case basis after contacting the USACE on-scene pilots stationed on M/V HARRISON or M/V WILLIAM JAMES via VHF-FM Channels 67 or 82 to make passing arrangements. Vessels shall transit at slowest safe speed to minimize wake.
