Why: This safety zone is needed to protect persons and vessels from the potential safety hazards associated with a fireworks display. 
When: This rule is effective tomorrow, November 22, 2019 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.

Waterways Status – Temporary Safety Zone

The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port New Orleans, under the authority of the Ports and Waterways Safety Act, will enforce a temporary safety zone as published in 33 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 165.845. This safety zone will be implemented on the Lower Mississippi River between Mile Marker (MM) 94.5 and MM 95.5 Above Head of Passes (AHP) and is needed to protect persons and vessels from the potential safety hazards associated with the “Christmas NOLA Style” fireworks display. This rule is effective on November 22, 2019, from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. local time.

All vessels are prohibited from entering the safety zone unless they have been granted permission by the Captain of the Port New Orleans or a designated representative, the Vessel Traffic Service Lower Mississippi River in this instance. Only vessels participating in the fireworks display and predesignated vessels are permitted within the safety zone between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on November 22, 2019.

A U.S. Coast Guard vessel will be on scene for the duration of the event and may be contacted on VHF-FM Channel 16 in the event of an emergency.
