  • All vessels are prohibited from entering this safety zone unless they have been granted permission by the Captain of the Port New Orleans or designated representative.  
  • Only racers participating in the boat race and designated vessels are permitted within the safety zone after 10:00 a.m. local.  
  • All vessels requesting permission to enter or transit through this safety zone are required to contact the Coast Guard.   
  • Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office will be on scene for the duration of the event and can be contacted on VHF-FM Channel 16 and 67.

The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port (COTP) New Orleans, under the authority of the Ports and Waterways Safety Act, will establish a safety zone on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, from Mile Marker (MM) 11 to 12, West of the Harvey Locks (WHL) in the area of Lafitte, LA.  This safety zone is needed to protect the persons and vessels associated with the Jean Lafitte Pirogue Race and is effective from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. local on September 7, 2019.

All vessels are prohibited from entering this safety zone unless they have been granted permission by the Captain of the Port New Orleans or designated representative.  Only racers participating in the boat race and designated vessels are permitted within the safety zone after 10:00 a.m. local.  All vessels requesting permission to enter or transit through this safety zone are required to contact the Coast Guard.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office will be on scene for the duration of the event and can be contacted on VHF-FM Channel 16 and 67.

Failure to comply with the requirements of this safety zone may subject persons to a civil penalty of up to $40,000.  Willful violation of this order may be punishable by a fine of not more than $50,000, imprisonment for not more than five years, or both.
