MSIB XVIII, Issue 057 – Boat Race Safety Zone, MM 215 – 230.4, Sept 01, 2018
The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port New Orleans, under the authority of the Ports and Waterways Safety Act, will establish a safety zone on the Lower Mississippi River from MM 215 to MM 230.4, Above Head of Passes. This safety zone is needed to protect the persons and vessels associated with the Big River Regional Paddle Board Race. This safety zone is effective from 7:30 a.m. until noon on September 01, 2018.
All vessels are prohibited from entering this safety zone unless they have been granted permission by the Captain of the Port New Orleans or her designated representative. Only racers participating in the paddle board race and designated vessels are permitted within the safety zone after 7:30 a.m. local. All vessels requesting permission to enter or transit through this safety zone are required to contact the Coast Guard.
A Coast Guard law enforcement vessel will be on scene for the duration of the event and can be contacted on VHF-FM Channel 16 or 67 or via the Officer of the Day at (225) 281-4785.
Failure to comply with the requirements of this safety zone will subject persons to a civil penalty of up to forty thousand dollars. Willful violation of this order may be punishable by the fine of not more than fifty thousand dollars or imprisonment for not more than five years, or both.
