Due to the temporary closure of Bayou Sorrel and Bayou Boeuf Locks, the Atchafalaya River is experiencing increased marine traffic.

 

This increase, combined with the area’s unique currents and bridge structures, have resulted in an increase in marine casualties.

 

Lack of area familiarity is identified as a contributing factor. 
The Coast Guard advises all mariners to proceed with caution and recommends that companies consider staffing vessels with experienced crews who are familiar with the route.
